OUR HISTORY
The Beginning of a Legacy
First and foremost, the history of the Fraternal Order of Classy Gentlemen Sigma Rhomeo Incorporated includes a variety of details. The Rhomeos initially began as a male affiliate in 1978. Many chapters were established by recruiting and enlisting male affiliates at universities and colleges nationwide, adopting various titles such as the Rhomeos of Sigma Gamma Rho, Sigma Gamma Rho Rhomeo, Rhomeo Club, Rhomeo Courts, or simply Rhomeo. The men enlisted as Rhomeos prior to 1980 did not aspire to build their own legacy instead, their goal was to uphold the vision and aspirations of those who chose them for a specific purpose.
The Fraternal Order of Classy Gentlemen: Sigma Rhomeo Incorporated inception began in the spring semester of 1980, when six distinguished gentlemen were chosen at Prairie View A&M University to embody the name Rhomeo. These notable, on campus men would come to be known as the Elite.
The Elite brothers, who became united in their quest, set out to establish a legacy dedicated to serving the vulnerable while stressing the importance of a strong educational foundation. After a brief period as male affiliates, this group of men resolved to evolve into a fully functioned fraternity rather than just a sweetheart affiliate. This decision would alter the perception of the affiliate. They wanted to be separate but not segregated from their commitment as gentlemen. Rhomeos was established as an organization committed to protecting the dignity of those who could not defend themselves. This fraternity would provide an avenue for young men to experience true brotherhood rooted in respect for one’s own identity.
The Elite brothers aspired to bring forth a new fraternity from amongst their existing options, rooted in the principles of commitment, accountability, and academic excellence. Embracing the philosophy of "Where there is no opportunity, create one," these men endeavored not only to provide valuable services to their community but also to extend the right hand of brotherhood to all undergraduate students.
These visionary gentlemen, known as the “Elite” are Lowell Washington, Charles Burleson, Frederick Wells, Lance A. Wyndon, Jimmy JD Williams, Algie Armstead.
